The FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 is a pivotal event in the world of professional chess, held to determine the player who will earn the right to compete against the current world champion, "Gukesh D", for the title of World Chess Champion 2026.
Format
🔄 Tournament Structure
- Format: Double Round-Robin system (each player faces every opponent twice, once with White and once with Black) across 14 rounds.
⏱️ Time Control

Initial Phase: 120 minutes allotted for the first 40 moves.

Secondary Phase: 30 minutes added for the remainder of the game after move 40.

Increment: A 30-second increment per move is applied, starting strictly from move 41.
⚔️ Tiebreak Regulations

Playoff Trigger: If two or more players are tied for first place at the conclusion of all 14 rounds, a tiebreak will be triggered.

Format: A Rapid and Blitz playoff will be played immediately to determine the ultimate tournament winner.
