The 2026 Chess Olympiad is the 46th edition of the most prestigious global team championship, organized by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in the city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The tournament brings together the world's elite male and female players to compete in 11 rounds under the Swiss system for the world title in both the men's and women's categories.

Format

Time Control: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves + 30 minutes for the rest, with a 30-second increment per move starting from move 1.

Match Points: Win = 2, Draw = 1, Loss = 0.

Tiebreakers (in order):

  1. Match Points

  2. Sonneborn-Berger (Increased Scores): Sum of game points scored against each opponent multiplied by that opponent's match points (excluding the lowest-scoring opponent).

  3. Total Game Points

  4. Buchholz: Sum of all opponents' match points (excluding the lowest).
